Government Set To Clamp Down on Clampers

The proposed Crime and Security Bill is due to go through Parliament soon. The bill contains various changes to the powers afforded to the Police and other Civil Enforcement agencies and if passed, will also introduce new strict rules for car and lorry clampers.

The bill will introduce a new licensing scheme that requires Clampers to adhere to a code of practice and (amongst other things) specifies limits on the penalty fines that Clampers can charge for vehicle release, rules on signage visibility and sets time limits for the towing of a vehicle and ensures a fair complaints procedure.

This means that Operators might be able to take up and challenge clampers if they feel the clampers are working outside of the proposed legislation.

Let us know what you think of Wheel-clamping companies. As a HGV or PSV Operator have you had any dealings with them?

RIAZ I used to run a shop near the town centre. My customers have been wheel clamped at neighbouring parking spaces, which are privately owned. Surprisingly, the clampers can get there within 15 minutes, as if they live nearby. The release fee was around 70 pounds. They have no feelings. I saw a documentary on TV, where a clamper has clamped the wheels of a funeral car. Can't get worse than that.

And believe me! It will make more sense to park on double yellow lines.
